PORTUGAL

The Solo Trip That Changed Everything

10–14 days4.9 / 5.014 member storiesEurope

Portugal punches way above its weight. The food is world-class, the wine is cheap and excellent, the people are genuinely warm, and almost everyone under 50 speaks English. For a first solo international trip — or a 10th — it's hard to beat. Lisbon and Porto are two of Europe's most walkable cities, and the Algarve coast will make you wonder why you ever bothered with crowded Mediterranean resorts.

The Guide

WHAT TO DO &
WHERE TO GO

Lisbon: Hills, Trams & Fado

Spend at least three days in Lisbon. Walk the Alfama district at dawn before the tourists arrive, ride Tram 28 for the views, eat a pastel de nata at Pastéis de Belém, and find a fado bar for the evening. The city rewards slow exploration — don't try to rush it.

Porto & the Douro Valley

Porto is arguably more charming than Lisbon. The Ribeira waterfront, the port wine caves of Vila Nova de Gaia, and a day trip up the Douro Valley by train or boat are all unmissable. Budget two to three days minimum.

The Algarve Coast

The southern coast is spectacular — dramatic sea cliffs, hidden coves, and long sandy beaches. Rent a car and drive the western Vicentine Coast for the wild, uncrowded version. Sagres at the southwestern tip feels like the edge of the world.

Sintra Day Trip

An hour from Lisbon by train, Sintra is a fairy-tale town of palaces and castles set in forested hills. Go on a weekday to beat the crowds. The Pena Palace and the Moorish Castle are both worth the climb.

"I was nervous about going solo at 63. Portugal cured that in about 48 hours. Friendly people, incredible food, and I never once felt out of place. I've been back twice."
